super 8

Just got home from the cinema. We watched “super 8″ by JJ Abrams. I was pleasantly surprised :) Eventough I know that Abrams can write a story that keeps you guessing I have yet to forgive him for milking the lost story in infinitum. One thing that at times made me observere the production rather then beeing inside the story was the massive use of blueish lensflares. It gave me the picture of a person just discovering a new filter or effect and OD on it. The kids and the vintage style made me associate to “stand by me”. On the subject of mr King, “super 8″ succeeded with something that a stephen King movie never could do, not to suck when you finally get to see the monster. Ok the vfx industry has matured a bit but still (I realize that I haven’t forgiven him either for building up something and never making it to the end).
The endless talk of “production value” was fun and made me think of stu maschwitz DV rebel’s guide.
