CamelCase

by Johan Borgström

“The “Lazy Programmer” theory
One theory for the origin of the camel case convention holds that C programmers and hackers simply found it more convenient than the standard underscore-based style.
The underscore key is inconveniently placed on american QWERTY keyboards. Additionally, in some fonts the underscore character can be confused with a minus sign; it can be overlooked because it falls below the string of characters or it can be lost entirely when displayed or printed underlined or when printed on a dot-matrix printer with a defective pin or misaligned ribbon. Moreover, early compilers severely restricted the length of identifiers (e.g., to 8 or 14 letters) or silently truncated all identifiers to that length. Finally, the small size of computer displays available in the 1970s encouraged the use of short identifiers. Many C programmers opted to use camel case instead of underscores, for it yielded legible compound names with fewer keystrokes and fewer characters.”

Inside job

by Johan Borgström

I just watched the movie “Inside job”. If you haven’t seen it I really recommend that you do. Many questions on how the crisis in 2008 could happen were answered. When you see some of the persons involved in the activity leading up to the collapse it is hard not to picture a little boy with the entire arm inside the cookie jar with chocolate all over the face saying it was not me. The really scary part is that many of these little chocolate stained boys are still in power in the Obama office. Greed is good, right ?

Stumbled across this visualization of the us debt. It is insane.

Ad nauseam

by Johan Borgström

I read a comment of the continuous stream of news of the Saab saga. One person used the term Ad nauseam. I had never heard the term so I looked it up. It is a Latin term as you might expect and is used to describe an argument which has been continuing “to the point of nausea”.
Argumentum ad nauseam or argument from repetition or argumentum ad infinitum is an argument made repeatedly (possibly by different people) until nobody cares to discuss it any more. This may sometimes, but not always, be a form of proof by assertion”.

I will paraphrase dan brown on SNL when he talks about his books, “this post has a lot of good words”.

Sommar i Norrbotten

by Johan Borgström

This summer we spent one week in Norrbotten, the very north of Sweden. I was born up there and it is always nice to go back. The silence, the midnight sun and the beautiful scenery is so relaxing it makes you wonder if living in a city is really the right thing to do. Here are some images that I took with my iPhone 4 around midnight.
